Achieving a Recycling-Oriented Society

The 2nd RETAILING Group aims to create a cycle of various things via business activities focused on the second-hand market, in order to reduce waste and promote the effective use of resources, and thereby contribute to achieving a sustainable society.

We are also promoting multifaceted efforts for reducing our environmental impact, such as reducing our greenhouse gas emissions toward net zero, adopting renewable energy, and improving energy efficiency by utilizing high-efficiency equipment.

We will address climate change and other environmental problems, so that our businesses can help achieve a recycling-oriented society and lead to a better future through business growth.

Achieving a Recycling-Oriented Society

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduced by Second-hand Business in Japan

With our second-hand and off-price businesses that discover new value in unwanted and unsold things and pass that value onto other people, we are able to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60,000 tons.

By recycling about 100 million products a year, we also help reduce waste (performance in FY2026).

Efforts Regarding Climate Change

Based on the recommendations of the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), the 2nd RETAILING Group identifies, evaluates, and discloses the risks and opportunities that we face due to the problem of climate change.

Net Zero Declaration

In keeping with the global framework on climate change and the Japanese government’s policy for a decarbonized society, we aim to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050.

We will continue to help build a sustainable society via group-wide efforts for achieving reduction targets, such as expanding the number of our stores using electricity derived from renewable energy, installing LED lighting, and switching to paper-free operations.

Initiatives for Decarbonization

The 2nd RETAILING Group strives to reduce energy consumption at stores and is accelerating initiatives for achieving a decarbonized society.

Utilizing Renewable Energy via PPAs

From 2024, we have adopted off-site PPAs and on-site PPAs at some of our stores, based on solar power generation.

A PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a contract whereby a business directly purchases electricity generated with renewable energy, such as solar, wind, or geothermal power, from an operator. With an off-site PPA, the operator supplies electricity from a remote facility located away from the site. With an on-site PPA, the operator installs a solar power generation facility at the site and supplies the generated electricity to the business.

We will continue to expand the number of stores adopting electricity derived from renewable energy as we strive to reduce our CO2 emissions.

Adopting Energy-Saving Equipment/Reducing Power Consumption

The 2nd RETAILING Group has adopted environmentally-friendly LED lighting. By performing detailed temperature control and adopting efficient air conditioning equipment at some of our stores, we also strive to reduce CO2 emissions via energy-saving.

Paperless Operation at Our Stores

At our cash registers, we have adopted tablet devices to eliminate the need for paper receipts when making purchases. This enables us to save paper and make our work more efficient.

Installing EV Chargers

We have installed EV chargers for electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles at some of our stores. By installing EV charging infrastructure, we contribute to reducing GHG emissions, while providing our customers with extra services and improved convenience.
